Poem: Where Do I Stand?

Jaden Graham '21
I never felt right calling myself black
because looking at the facts, I'm much more than that
White, Cherokee, African-American
& probably more so where do I stand?
I'm black enough to get looks in public, but I've been told I act white
So if I'm acting white, I can act black right?

Wrong.

You can't act a color,
But I can act like my sisters and brothers,
If I'm around them long enough
But most of my friends are white and that's how I've been brought up.
It's tough

I have mixed feelings
Mixed personalities
I'm mixed,

But you see,
I'm one
One human being
One child of God

So where do I stand?

Well I stand with my people:
My black community,
My white community,
because we are equal

But right now, my black community has it hard,
You've seen
It's a dark time, but I still dream
Dream of hope
Dream of the possibility
that my black community will have equal opportunity

So again, I stand with my people and I fight to be equal
But I call on my white community to help end this evil.
