Student-Artists Visit Van Every/Smith Art Galleries at Davidson College

In late September, 7th and 8th grade artists from Ms. Tiffani Thomas’ class visited the Van Every/Smith Art Galleries at Davidson College. The visit was in coordination with an assignment where the students were asked to research a specific art movement and the artists/ artwork associated with that movement.

A gallery curator, Mrs. Allison Tolbert, pulled 12 pieces of artwork from the college archives which represent art movements like Impressionism, Abstract Expressionism, Cubism, etc.  The students saw original artwork by Salvador Dali, Keith Herring, Picasso, and even a Rembrandt etching, Jupiter and Antiope, from 1631! Afterwards, the students roamed around the main galleries and admired the current exhibit featuring artwork by former Davidson College artists in residence.

Ms. Thomas will coordinate a group of middle school artists each quarter this year. The plan is to coordinate an year-end art show which includes select student presentations along with the Davidson College examples. Stay tuned for when that show will be unveiled!
