Davidson Day School is excited to announce an important leadership transition that will take effect on July 1, 2026.
Michael Smith: Davidson Day’s First Director of Donor and Alumni Relations
After more than sixteen years at Davidson Day, including fourteen as Head of Upper School, Michael Smith will step into a new role as the school’s first Director of Donor and Alumni Relations. In this position, he will strengthen connections with alumni and donors, ensuring their lasting engagement with the school’s mission and future.
With nearly five decades of independent school leadership, Michael brings unmatched experience and a deep love for the Davidson Day community to the role. He has also returned to the classroom this year to teach English, his first passion, and will continue teaching during the 2026–2027 academic year.
Reflecting on his new chapter, Michael said:
“Being back in the classroom feels like slipping into an old pair of jeans that still fit just right, and I have loved every minute of it. At the same time, I’m energized by the chance to deepen connections with our alumni and donors, whose commitment helps sustain the heart of this school. Davidson Day has been my home for over 16 years, and I am grateful to continue serving a community I care so deeply about.”
Andrew Griffith: Head of Middle and Upper School
At the same time, Andrew Griffith will become Davidson Day’s new Head of Middle and Upper School.
Now in his third year at the school, Andrew has already made significant contributions to enhancing the Middle School experience. Before joining Davidson Day, he served as Associate Head of School at Pope John Paul II Preparatory School, where he oversaw 750 students in grades six through 12. His career also includes experience as a high school history and English teacher, coach, and administrator.
“I am honored to step into this new role leading both our Middle and Upper Schools,” Andrew said. “One of the things I treasure most about Davidson Day is the daily connection with our students, and I look forward to building on our strong foundation to align the Middle and Upper School experience even more closely.”
National Search for Assistant Heads
To support this expanded structure, Davidson Day will conduct a national search for two new Assistant Head positions in Middle and Upper School. These roles will also include teaching responsibilities, ensuring leaders remain closely connected to the student experience.
Looking Ahead
With Michael Smith returning to the classroom while expanding alumni and donor engagement, and Andrew Griffith stepping into a new leadership role overseeing both Middle and Upper School, Davidson Day is positioned for continued growth and alignment across all divisions.
The school community celebrates Michael's many years of leadership and looks forward to his continued impact, while also welcoming Andrew into his new role with confidence and excitement for the future.
