Music begins in our youngest grades as students begin to read music as well as learn to sing and play xylophones and recorders. Band instruction begins in 4th grade and continues through middle school, as all students select a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument and play in pep band at home athletic games and for special events.
In upper school, students may pursue Contemporary Ensemble, where guitars, keyboards, bass, drums, and vocalists perform pop hits from the last fifty years at events in and around Charlotte. This group also travels with Davidson Day's International Field Experiences team to perform abroad in Spain over the summer. Students can also take Modern Music as an elective, a class which blends the arts, musicology, popular culture, and history. In this class, upper classmen focus on learning about music of different eras and styles from the last 100 years and are introduced to the new world of digital audio production.
