LEC Instructors meet with students in a one-on-one setting to provide additional, review, or remedial instruction in a specific subject area (Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, and/or Foreign Language) or to address specific academic difficulties (reading comprehension or auditory processing, for example). Tutoring is available to students at all grade levels.
Utilizing an individualized program designed to develop organizational and time management skills, as well as study skills. The LEC academic coaches meet with students in a one-on-one setting for one-to-five sessions per week to support and improve academic performance. Academic coaching is more than 'homework help.' It is a working relationship focused on the processes of learning. Students will likely have homework remaining after sessions. Academic coaching is available to students at all grade levels.
The LEC offers course instruction in a one-on-one environment for Davidson Day students. Request for course instruction must be approved by the head of school and division head of which student falls under. Courses in this category meet all standard grade-level-appropriate Davidson Day expectations, but allow for a modified schedule. Student transcripts carry distinctive course identification and include a description reading “Course delivered in a one-on-one setting utilizing standard Davidson Day curricular expectations.”
In partnership with the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools (NCAIS), Davidson Day offers online courses through VISnet. Online courses are available to those students who need required courses that do not fit into their class schedule and those students who desire specific enrichment courses that are not offered within our curriculum. This course of study must be approved by the division head based on each requesting student’s specific needs. Students will not be approved to enroll in an online course if the course is offered in our curriculum and can be included in their class schedule. Since online courses are noted as such on the student’s transcript, students should discuss possible enrollment in online courses with the Director of College Counseling prior to enrollment. A staff member from the LEC will serve as the online course mentor to insure that the student is on track with the course, however, the LEC mentor will not provide instruction or tutoring for the course.
The LEC offers on-site speech language therapy services to Davidson Day students designed to address developmental and physical impediments.
LEC speech-language therapists meet with students in a one-on-one or small group setting, for one-or-more sessions per week to improve oral-motor competence, language processing and comprehension, and the skills necessary for effective communication with peers and adults. Speech-language therapy is available to students at all grade levels, with sessions typically lasting 30-minutes.
