Performing Arts

The performing arts are an integral part of life at Davidson Day, inspiring creativity, collaboration, and confidence from Early Childhood through Upper School. Through theater, music, dance, and movement, students explore self-expression while building empathy, cultural awareness, and a deeper understanding of the human experience.

Early Childhood & Lower School

Beginning in Early Childhood with students as young as two years old, music, dance, and movement are woven into daily routines. Our youngest Patriots explore new instruments, sing and sign, and perform both in the classroom and on stage, building a joyful foundation for creative expression.

Throughout Lower School, students refine their musical abilities through special instruction, supporting academic learning and student curiosity. In Kindergarten, students have the opportunity to participate in Musical Theatre Club, where they explore storytelling, performance, and collaboration in an age-appropriate and engaging environment; and in third and fourth grade, our students learn to place the recorder and ukulele.

Middle School

In fifth grade, every Davidson Day student participates in band. Students explore a variety of instruments, learn to read and play music, and ultimately select a woodwind, brass, or percussion instrument. Band members perform for the school community at pep rallies, performances, and special events, while also representing Davidson Day beyond campus at regional events and community celebrations such as Christmas in Davidson.

Middle School students also can elect to participate in theatre in which they explore the foundations of theatrics, performance history, and oration. Through the study of technical theater, students gain an understanding of the many elements involved in producing a live show. They develop skills in acting, voice, and movement while participating in productions throughout the school year.

Upper School

In Upper School, our students may pursue performing arts electives, including theatre and contemporary ensemble. Our theatre program puts on two incredible shows a year, at least one of which is a musical, and students have the opportunity to participate in a cast or crew capacity.

Our contemporary ensemble offers a dynamic, "School of Rock" experience, featuring high-energy performances that span decades of musical innovation.
