Mary Alexander ‘21, Mallorie Haines ‘21, and Blane St. Clair ‘21 Sign National Letters of Intent

On Wednesday, Nov. 11, 2020, three senior student-athletes signed a National Letter of Intent, which makes their commitment to compete at the collegiate level official.

Mary Alexander ‘21 joined the varsity soccer team as a 7th Grade student at Davidson Day, and currently has career totals of 99 goals and 34 assists.  She will enroll at The College of Charleston and compete on their Division I soccer team.

“Mary makes the choice to defend when she doesn’t have the ball, instead of using it as a time to rest, and her work rate on the field is unmatched,” said Brad Laatsch, an upper school chemistry teacher and the head coach of the varsity soccer programs at Davidson Day.  “As a coach you want your best players to be your hardest workers, and everyone benefits from Mary working as hard as she does.”

Mallorie Haines ‘21 enrolled at Davidson Day in the midst of her freshman year, then set a Davidson Day school record and Mecklenburg County record by scoring 51 points in one of her first varsity girls basketball games for the Patriots.  Haines helped lead the Patriots to back-to-back state championships in the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 seasons and has been named as one of the country’s top 100 girls basketball players by ESPN. Beyond her role on the basketball court, Haines also competes as a member of the Davidson Day varsity volleyball team and Davidson Day varsity track team.  Haines will enroll at Davidson College and compete on their Division I basketball team

“Mallorie has worked tirelessly for this opportunity and continues to commit herself to preparing for the next level, both academically and athletically,” said Sierra Simpson, head coach of the Davidson Day varsity girls basketball team.  “During her time at Davidson Day, her leadership and playmaking ability have been key to the success of the Patriots basketball program, and she will leave behind a great legacy here.”

Blane St. Claire ‘21 joined Davidson Day as a senior and is a member of the Davidson Day varsity boys basketball team. Blane chose to attend the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York, and compete for the Army’s Division I basketball team.

“It was clear to me from my first conversation with Blane that he has an incredible passion for basketball, but even more impressive is his passion to get the most out of himself in everything he does,” said Athletic Director Ron Johnson, who is also the head coach of the varsity boys basketball team.  “He has proven to be an outstanding student, drawing interest from some of the nation’s top academic institutions.”
