Davidson Day Community Honors and Celebrates Mr. Wes Wehunt

Today, in a school-wide ceremony held virtually on the Zoom platform, Head of School Pete Moore and Chair of the Davidson Day School Board of Trustees Renee Brown celebrated and acknowledged the service of Mr. Wes Wehunt, who led the Davidson Day community as Interim Head of School during the 2019–2020 Academic Year.

“Few people with whom I have worked or met personally or professionally care more about the students they serve and the people they lead than Mr. Wes Wehunt,” said Moore.  “It’s an honor to work alongside such a person of character who embodies the values of Davidson Day.”

At a time of need, Mr. Wehunt accepted the responsibility of guiding the school through a Head of School search process and what turned out to be an unexpectedly challenging summer and 2019–2020 Academic Year.  When the coronavirus pandemic swept across the globe, under Mr. Wehunt’s leadership, Davidson Day transitioned to a virtual teaching and learning environment.  He constructed an excellent team of colleagues, medical and public health experts, and trustees which together concluded the 2019–2020 Academic Year and prepared to reopen the Davidson Day campus for in-person learning in 2020–2021.

“We admire Mr. Wehunt’s ability to stay one step or more ahead, to carry forward transformative ideas, all the while keeping focused on the most important job we have in this community which is the academic and character education of our students,” said Brown.  “Wes, we all know that you and your entire family are hockey fans, so because you’re always able to stay focused on where the puck is going, not where it is, we present you this symbol of your amazing leadership and stewardship of our secure, supportive community.”

Brown presented Mr. Wehunt with a Charlotte Checkers hockey puck signed by Sabastian Aho and also shared that a fellow trustee has offered a complimentary vacation at their personal beach house for the Wehunt family to enjoy for a week of their choosing.

Thank you to Mr. Wes Wehunt!
