Athletics Update from the NCISAA

Ron Johnson, Director of Athletics
We continue to prepare for the start of the 2020–2021 school year, and I would like to provide an update on our fall athletics programs and timeline.
Our plan is to follow the timeline established by the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and its plan for member schools to begin playing sports in the fall.

The NCISAA return-to-play plan begins with low- and moderate-risk sports.

Low risk sports include boys & girls cross country, girls golf, and girls tennis.

Moderate risk sports are boys soccer and volleyball.

The current timeline, which is subject to change, for Junior Varsity and Varsity sports:
  1. July 27 – The fall season begins, under Stage I or Stage II of the NCISAA Summer Guidelines
  2. August 10 – Schools are eligible to hold full practices
  3. August 24 – Schools are eligible to scrimmage
  4. August 31 – Schools are eligible to begin games and/or contests
Middle School Sports practices will begin on August 24, with Middle School games and contests beginning on September 8.

To allow our student-athletes, faculty, and coaches an opportunity to better acclimate to the start of the 2020–2021 Academic Year, Davidson Day School will not conduct any athletic practices, workouts, etc. during the first week of academic instruction, August 17–21, 2020.

These dates and plans are contingent on North Carolina progressing into Phase III.

If Governor Cooper extends Phase II for North Carolina, NCISAA member schools will remain in Stage I or Stage II of the NCISAA Summer Guidelines.

We are following the guidance of the NCISAA Staff and Board of Advisors, who are building COVID-related policies for all fall sports.  The organization will make those requirements and recommendations available to member schools by August 3.

Our commitment is to a safe return to campus for all of our students, and a safe return to sports for our student-athletes and coaches.

Please reach out to me should you have any questions or concerns. Go Patriots!

Sincerely,

Director of Athletics
