That belief is at the heart of Davidson Day’s newest Upper School signature program: Diploma Distinctions.

Diploma Distinctions are focused, structured pathways that Upper School students can pursue alongside their high school diploma. Rather than simply accumulating credits, students can choose a meaningful area of study and spend two years going deep, building expertise, engaging in real-world experiences, and producing original research before they ever set foot on a college campus.

At the end of their sophomore year, Davidson Day students have the opportunity to apply to one of three pathways: Business and Civic Engagement, STEMM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics, and Medicine), or Global Studies. Each pathway is intentionally designed to connect classroom learning to real-world application and to help students graduate with not just credits, but with confidence and a sense of direction.

“At its core, Diploma Distinctions embody what makes a Davidson Day education distinctive,” Head of School Andrew Bishop shared. “It’s not just about what students know, but what they are prepared to do with that knowledge. Not more classes. More purpose.”

The college admissions landscape is more competitive than ever, and the applications that stand out aren't the ones with the most activities. They're the ones where a student's intellectual identity is unmistakably clear. Where the essays, the experiences, and the work all point in the same direction and tell a coherent story.

Diploma Distinctions are designed to help students build exactly that story. Not because the story is manufactured for an application, but because the work is real, the research is original, and the experiences are genuine. When a Davidson Day student writes a college essay about their capstone research or their practicum hours, they're drawing on something that actually happened—something they earned.

But this program isn't only about college admissions. It's about what kind of person the student becomes in the process. The Diploma Distinctions are built around Davidson Day's CORE values—courage, ownership, resilience, and empathy—not as abstract ideas, but as daily practices. Courage shows up when a student pursues an ambitious research question and defends it in front of an audience. Ownership shows up when they take responsibility for the integrity and quality of their own scholarship. Resilience shows up when the research gets hard, and the answers aren't clean. Empathy shows up when they realize that the ideas they're studying aren't abstract and that they impact real people, in real communities, with real consequences.

“The aim is not simply preparation for college admission,” Andrew Griffith, Head of Middle School and future Head of Middle and Upper School, said. “It is preparation for sustained contribution. By cultivating disciplined inquiry, principled reasoning, and real-world application, the Diploma Distinctions equip students to engage complexity with responsibility and discernment.”
