From Davidson Day to the Main Salmon River: Braden Hanson '23

For many people, owning a business is often just a distant dream. For Davidson Day alum Braden Hanson ’23, that dream became reality at just 20 years old. Today, Braden is the proud co-owner of Nomad Whitewater Adventures, an outdoor adventure company offering unforgettable rafting experiences in the heart of Idaho.

Braden attended Davidson Day from eighth grade through graduation, where his love for the outdoors quickly became a defining part of who he was. During his sophomore year, Davidson Day’s College Counseling team recognized that passion and introduced him to the Alzar School, a semester-long outdoor adventure program in Idaho, an opportunity that would help shape his future.

“The amount that the teachers at Davidson Day show interest in your personal interests and ask about them means a lot,” Braden said. “It helped me—and helps kids at that age—pursue those interests further and figure out what you’re passionate about.”

That support and genuine interest in his passions left a lasting impression on Braden.

“Davidson Day has such a special group of faculty,” he reflected. “It’s not just how great they are at teaching and setting students up for success that makes a difference; it’s who they are as people that impacts the students. They may not know it, but they do.”

The summer after his junior year, Braden took another step that would define his future by working at the U.S. National Whitewater Center in Charlotte. As a raft guide, trip lead, and raft repair technician, he sharpened his skills on the water and deepened his love for adventure. He continued working there through his senior year, gaining valuable hands-on experience.

After graduating from Davidson Day, Braden enrolled at the University of Wyoming, majoring in Outdoor Recreation and Tourism Management. But when an unexpected opportunity arose to purchase a whitewater rafting company in Idaho last February, Braden knew he couldn’t pass it up.

With the support of his parents, his mom Carmin, and his step-dad, none other than Davidson Day teacher Crispin McDonald, Braden made the bold decision to step away from his classes and fully commit to the opportunity. He spent last summer working alongside the company’s previous owner, learning every aspect of the business. This summer marks his first season as the official co-owner of Nomad Whitewater Adventures.

“Doing something like this for a job has been a dream of mine since I was a senior in high school,” Braden said. “The trust that my mom and Crispin have in me to know what is best for the company means the world to me.” 

Nomad Whitewater Adventures specializes in six-day, five-night rafting trips on Idaho’s Main Salmon River, featuring expert guides, riverside camping, and gourmet meals. As co-owner, Braden manages every part of the operation, from securing permits and insurance to coordinating bookings, setting up the warehouse, and guiding trips on the river.

Braden is also continuing to invest in his education. He is currently enrolled at a local community college to earn his EMT certification, further expanding his skill set on the water, and plans to return to the University of Wyoming to complete his degree.
