Commencement Honors

Valedictorian

The Valedictorian is awarded to the student with the highest weighted GPA in the senior class. This year’s valedictorian is Karen Chien. Karen has excelled in Upper School taking 11 AP classes in 5 subjects, and she takes great pride in giving her best on every assignment. Karen is a disciplined and mature student who grasps difficult concepts easily, but also seeks help immediately when she notices any perceived weaknesses. Karen will attend Brown University in the fall.
Salutatorian

The Salutatorian is awarded to the student with the second highest weighted GPA in the senior class. This year’s salutatorian is Katie Jones. Katie’s transcript stands out with 10 AP classes in 4 subjects and Spanish to level 5. Her course selection proves that she has both academic depth and academic breadth. Katie’s classroom approach is beyond reproach: she is thorough, conscientious, and engaged in discussions. Katie will attend Northeastern University in the fall.
Head of School's Award

The Head of School's Award celebrates the senior who has embraced all aspects of Davidson Day School's mission. The recipient of this award is characteristically an inspiration to both students and faculty and consistently demonstrates a passion for learning, a strong sense of social responsibility, and a commitment to personal integrity. The 2023 recipient is Chase Newman.
Karen Wolter Award

The Karen Wolter Award for Student Excellence is given to a graduating senior at their commencement in honor of Mrs. Karen Wolter, an early trustee and former board chair. The recipient of this award is a well-rounded student who excelled in academic, athletic, and artistic endeavors while a student at Davidson Day. The 2023 recipient is Taraneh Nikrooz.
Commencement Speaker

Vince Papale was the Commencement Speaker for the Class of 2023. In 1976, Vince became the NFL’s first 30-year-old rookie who had never played college football and played three seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles. In 2006, Disney Films produced Invincible, based on Vince’s life starring Mark Wahlberg. Vince now travels the world telling his compelling story, inspiring others of their own invincibility.
