Zammitti Named Herald Weekly Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year

Davidson Day senior cross country star Melissa Zammitti won an individual state championship as an eighth-grader and was seeking a second title to close her distinguished career. At the NCISAA 2A cross country meet earlier this month, she ran a 18:29, 10 seconds ahead of Carolina Day senior Ralene Kwiatkowski, who had clipped Zammitti by 10 seconds last season to win the title.

“Last year, I was kind of mad that I didn’t win it,” Zammitti said. “I think I was one of the favorites, and I definitely wanted to get a title before I finished my career.”

Zammitti was named the 2016 Herald Weekly Girls Cross Country Runner of the Year and is weighing her college options, choosing between Cornell and North Carolina as her future running home.

But her high school career isn’t done quite yet.

On Nov. 26, Zammitti will run the Foot Locker South Regional at McAlpine Park.
It’s her last chance to break the 18-minute mark in high school, and that’s certainly the goal going into her final race.
